Networking?

I went to the Dayton Book Expo today looking to network with other authors, meet other authors, and learn about their books, and also to get my name out there about my book. The even was very nice. It very well put together, and I thank the vendors, and sponsors to be able to put an event like that together for the Dayton are. We need plenty of positive events like that around.
As I was going around browsing the many tables that was set of very nicely, I was asked if I was a reader or writer many times by the author that I was visiting. I stated that I was an author and introduced my poetry chapbook. The Dwindling of a Once Prosperous City. I did not think I was causing no harm in doing that. About an hour and a half into the program of the the program directors approached me and told me that many of the authors complained about me. I was very polite, and nonchalant so I really did not understand what the complaints was about. He also said that many was wandering how come I did not get a table of my own. Well, I did not have the funds to get a table of my own, and if I did I think I would have proceeded with the same approach.
I love meeting new authors, African American authors at that. I love to read and hear about other people interesting story. So, if I was wrong in check out other authors and presenting my work at the same time then I don't apologize. It is a wonderful thing to hear from other authors to see how that got to where they are. Because behind every story there is another story.
I pray and hope one day that we can help and uplift each other, rather than tearing each other down. I went to the book expo as once stated, to meet other authors, maybe purchase a book, the workshops, networking, and maybe to plug my poetry chapbook in the midst of soaking in everything thing in, but I left upset because few authors was complaining about me. WOW! Is publicity really that scarce where we can not share the spotlight. I am trying to get where you are, and support you on the way. I guess its every man for itself in the publishing world.
Although, the events of today was pretty suspect, I will not let then mess up my whole day. I continue to work on my novel, and promote my chapbook, The Dwindling of a Once Prosperous City.
