Are We Becoming to Dependent on Technology?
Do
you find it a difficult to go minutes without looking at your cellphone? Do you
have the feeling of being lost if your cellphone is not in close vicinity? Many
people find it difficult to go without their phone. Though the cell phone is a
fairly recent invention, it has rapidly surpassed many other technologies. Cellphones
has surely made pay phones almost extinct, and less people are using landline
phones. Since the first phone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell, telephones
has continued to advance and has dominated the communication world. There were
landlines, and payphones, which up until about a decade ago; they were seen on
almost every corner. Cellphones has become one of the primary forms of
communications. Today’s cellphones are much different than the first
cellphones. Some of the first mobile cell phones were car phones. They were
only as mobile as where you took your car, and had fewer capabilities than the
cellphones that dominate the market today. As technologies continued to
advanced more capabilities were given to the cellphone, and they became
handheld and mobile, nonetheless the first cellphones were much bigger. As
cellphones were advancing they were becoming much smaller and applications were
being added. Now, cellphone users are capable of doing almost anything with a
cellphone. You can instantly download music, movies, news, and take pictures
and videos.
But
cellphones are not the only technology that has dominated our world. In almost
every aspect we are moving from print to digital, however is that good? What
are we leaving ourselves vulnerable too?
With all the advances in technology, has it changed our mindsets, made
us less patient and lazy, made us vulnerable to attacks by predators via
viruses or any other outlet that we may open ourselves up to by indulging in
such a trend? After over 200 years Encyclopedia Britannica no longer print
books and has gone digital, and other options such as Wikipedia is available,
however Wikipedia is not very credible and cannot be used as a credible source
at many Universities. Cursive Writing, which used to be a valuable asset
amongst individuals, is on the verge of becoming a loss. With teachers given
the option of teaching cursive Writing, are we eventually leading towards the
obliteration of writing altogether and moving totally to digital?
Technological
advances will only continue to advance, however is all of technologies advances
in our favor? Are we becoming too dependent on something that could possibly take
over our lives? Technology has not only created jobs but also has taken away
jobs because of the use of humans hands is no longer needed. Let’s not allow
technology to allow simple things become extinct. Lack of internet does not
mean we are shut out to the rest of the world, but open up to what once was,
before the internet, video games and other technological advances that has
abrupt changes in society. Let’s not allow ourselves to fall so deep into
technologies advances that we become indebt to technology.
